The peaceful beach of Pirate Cove. Quiet and visited by only a few people, it was a wonderful place for one to collect their thoughts and relax. In fact, because of this factor, this location had become a particular favorite of a young man by the name of Kenji.
Kenji was there for training purposes, though he wasn't doing any normal exercises - he had already done all those. Pushups, running laps, swimming, everything. Right now, he was only going through martial arts maneuvers. He mastered Bajiquan and Piguaquan as a child, thanks to his virtually inhuman intelligence and dedicated training. Bajiquan was meant for close-range attacks, and Piguaquan was meant for long-range, leaving Kenji very few openings in terms of martial arts and fighting.
Using the more fluid movements of Piguaquan to start off with, he moved with his arms extended, using his body to guide his chopping palms which moved like whips. That was the whole basis of Piguaquan - to use the acceleration generated by his body and add force to his strikes. His arms needed to be extended, but that's why it was considered a long range style. Not to mention that his strikes were very powerful.
Smoothly transitioning, Kenji shifted from Piguaquan to Bajiquan. Kenji's movements became faster and a bit more abrupt, focusing on hitting with the elbow, knees, and shoulders. With his techniques, they'd be fit for close-range combat, precisely what this style was meant for. The moves were aimed at vital areas of an opponent's body, meant for swift incapacitation. It fit Kenji's personality - strike hard, strike fast, strike decisively so as to not prolong the combat and waste strength.
Smoothly switching from one style to another, Kenji focused on his attack and defense, calmly breathing through his nostrils, working up a bit of a sweat as well. He was never good at dealing with heat. Nevertheless, he didn't stop. He could tolerate a bit of heat, and he needed to practice anyway.
One would think with his newfound abilities, he wouldn't have to do this kind of training. Few realize that over-reliance on one's sole strength often led to their downfall. Kenji had many strengths, and if he found a weakness, be it in combat or in other situations, he tried his best to fix it. This way, if someone got close to him despite his powers, he could easily fend them off.
Still, he didn't have that much practical knowledge, and he doubted that anyone could really be that much of a match against him hand-to-hand. He sighed quietly in his mind as he continued going through the motions, keeping his muscles relaxed, yet ready.
He would practice for another hour, then call it a day and go home. He didn't have work or research today - he'd probably go home, spend some time reading, then go to bed. He was a rather... introverted person.

Before Kenji had arrived there, however, a young girl had decided to stop by the most secluded spot on the Cashile shore known as Pirate Cove.
One reason not a lot of people visisted this spot because there were various sharp rocks, and it could be considered dangerous, especially if somebody decided to climb along the rock walls and fall. However, Leiko was here merely to go in the water for a while, perhaps go for a run, and then head back home. She too was a bit inverted in general. Once she arrived there, she’d set down her towel before she took off her shorts and shirt, revealing her one-piece bathing suit underneath. With that, she headed over towards the water. She swam out fairly far, and did some laps, though when she was done she decided to let herself relax in the water for a while. It was rare for her to be out here like this and relaxing; it felt quite nice. Of course lying in the water was still nothing like lying in a field of lush grass and flowers... Then again, she could control the power of the earth. What would one expect?
After Leiko felt that she was finished with the water, she headed back towards the shore, in the general direction of where she’d set her stuff down. As she approached the shore, she happened to see another person standing there. But he wasn’t just standing; he seemed to be going through various martial arts manuver by himself, all of them she recognized. As she continued walking out of the water, she felt like she recognized him. Then as his glasses and shorter hair cut came further into view, she knew exactly who he was. ”Is that you, Mr. Chan?”
she asked, raising her voice so she could be heard. She didn’t hurry over to where he was; after all, she was more or less intruding. She just continued to walk towards him at the same pace, water dripping off of her from the ocean as she approached him. It might’ve sounded odd, given that he was a year younger than her, but she’d met Kenji when he’d been acting as a substitute teacher for her pre-calc honours class. She’d been the only one that had any answers, as always. After class, she ended up chatting with him a bit after class. Because he’d been a substitute, she still called him by his surname. She remembered that he was quite brilliant, and she admired how much he’d accomplished at such a young age. Approaching Kenji, she stood in front of him and said, ”So you’re adept at martial arts as well? You’re quite enigmatic it seems.” she told him, smirking a slight bit. She usually wasn’t so social, but in a few ways she assumed that Kenji was a bit of an equal, unlike her other classmates that she did her best to avoid. Before saying anything more, she moved over to where her stuff was, grabbing her towel. She began to dry her hair a bit as she asked, ”Come here to train a bit, away from the usual crowds?” [/blockquote][/blockquote] tagged: Kenji words: 528 muse: ‘Perfect; by Hedley notes: There ya go credit: DUCK DUCK'S NOT A GOOSE at Caution 2.0. Nothing short of precise movements, Kenji kept going. He had practiced each move until perfection - or as close to it anyway, because one could never be perfect in anything. Such skills were handy where he came from. Heck, one time he used it while he was tearing apart a building filled with battle-hardened criminals. That and his powers.
Is that you, Mr. Chan?
He blinked in surprise at hearing his name and looked over and saw a teenage girl walking toward him. Leiko Kondo. She was one of his students when he substituted for a teacher that had been on leave. Leiko herself was practically the best student in the class - the first test he gave out was accidentally far too hard (despite remaining on the same subject) for most of the class, but Leiko was the only one to get a high score.
But what Leiko wore... it was a one-piece, and it certainly wasn't anything like what he heard girls wore at the beach (which he didn't have much first-hand experience - he avoided crowded places like the beach), but it fit her well. And it still revealed a good amount of skin... He shook his head slightly to clear the thoughts out of his head. Now where the devil did THOSE thoughts come from?!
He himself was actually in more normal clothing - a black t-shirt with a lightning-blue Chinese dragon in the front, a Yin-Yang symbol on the back, with jeans and sneakers. His more or less regular attire. Most people had him pinned down as a nerd... and they were mostly right. However, whoever thought he was simply a nerd were often in for a rude surprise.
So you’re adept at martial arts as well? You’re quite enigmatic it seems.
Kenji said nothing. That was the way he was - he never spoke unless it was necessary, and even then only said the necessary things. And Kenji cultivated the enigmatic image, albeit only half intentionally. Really, he just wanted to keep a low-profile, which so far failed miserably, considering he was just subbing at a high school despite being practically the same age as his students.
Come here to train a bit, away from the usual crowds?
He nodded. "Indeed, Ms. Kondo. I don't need people watching me as I train." Kenji hated any unwanted attention and unfortunately seemed to be getting a lot of it these days. Still, at least he could remain low-key... as long as the fact that he was a child prodigy didn't really spread out too far. He had already stopped being a substitute (and is hoping that he wouldn't have to do it again), but it seemed that people don't forget him easily. Who could? It's kind of odd to have a person who was the same age as your official teacher.
"May I ask what you're doing here?" he asked, looking at her, keeping his voice neutral and his eyes and face expressionless. Such an act came from training and preference. It's not that there was anything hostile or arrogant in his attitude, one could tell that much - it was just the way he was.

While Leiko wasn’t the most social person in the world and wasn’t usually the type to go up to people and talk to them, she knew that Kenji took the cake on being anti-social. He usually lacked in expression, creating a cold atmosphere around him in order to keep people at a distant. Leiko was pretty skilled at reading people, and she assumed that he had his reasons for keeping people at bay. She herself just wasn’t all that comfortable around people, so she kept herself out of situations where she would have to be social. "Indeed, Ms. Kondo. I don't need people watching me as I train."
he said to her. If she hadn’t sense that is cold attitude was manufactured, she would’ve taken those words as a silent jab towards her to let her know that he wanted to be alone. "May I ask what you're doing here?" he then asked her. That was one thing she’d appreciated about Kenji whenever he’d spoken to her; he was polite. ”Not a big fan of the crowds either. Felt like doing a few laps before heading back home.” she told him, and then moved the towel she was holding from drying her hair to bringing it around her shoulders, holding onto both ends of the towel. ”I come here to train sometimes as well, though I tend to stick to my backyard – there’s more than enough room for me there.” She also preferred moving around among grass and trees compared to sand and rocks. She just felt more connected to her power that way, even if she wasn’t practicing with it. Normally Leiko practiced her own highly-polished martial art skills as often as she could. She then moved back to her clothes which she’d set on a nearby rock, and then turned back towards Kenji. ”I’m all done here though, so I’ll leave you alone. Have a good day, Mr. Chan.” Giving a slight bow towards him – force of habit – she turned around and began walking back towards the more public part of the beach. Once there, she’d begin to head home. [/blockquote][/blockquote] tagged: Kenji words: 352 muse: N/A, in Journalism class XD notes: Short, sorry. credit: DUCK DUCK'S NOT A GOOSE at Caution 2.0. Not a big fan of the crowds either. Felt like doing a few laps before heading back home.
Kenji nodded. That was understandable. Leiko was something of a kindred spirit - focused on their own interests, but caring little for other people and their company. Kenji himself delved often into research and academics, and only spoke to his colleagues about research. He didn't have any friends outside of his family (like his cousin Hayate), but he frankly didn't need them.
I come here to train sometimes as well, though I tend to stick to my backyard – there’s more than enough room for me there.
He could tell that much. Looking at her body figure, he figured out that she had a build of a martial artists. He should know, he trained under many of them to find the styles that fit him like a glove and finally mastered them. Mainly Bajiquan and Piguaquan. And a backyard... Kenji actually had a small house that his parents bought for him, but quite frankly, Kenji kept it more or less austere with few comforts. He wasn't good at interior decorating, and he never really believed in unnecessary luxuries.
I’m all done here though, so I’ll leave you alone. Have a good day, Mr. Chan.
He gave a respectful nod back. "The same to you, Ms. Kondo," he replied. He prepared to go back to training as she walked away when he realized... that build of a martial artists did not come from beginners. He wondered how experienced she was at martial arts. Training with oneself cuold only get one so far... he needed a good sparring partner. Maybe Leiko could provide that?
"Ms. Kondo, wait a moment," he said. His eyes were expressionless still, but he seemed to emit an air of curiosity. "I saw that you have a martial artist's body. Do you, by chance, know any martial arts?" he asked. Might as well check. For all he knew, he could've made a mistake and maybe she was an athlete. One never knew.
He hoped the answer was a yes, though.

Leiko continued to walk away from the cove, still using her free hand to dry her hair a bit with the towel that was draped over her shoulders. She had no qualms about walking around in her bathing suit. She didn’t obsess about her body like other girls her age did. She’d been in martial arts since she was 5, so she’d never had any trouble staying in shape. And she didn’t really care that much about her outward appearance anyway, rarely wearing any makeup and dressing in clothes that were cute but comfortable.
Still walking, she suddenly heard Kenji’s voice behind her, saying, "Ms. Kondo, wait a moment.”
Leiko stopped and turned around, wondering what it was he wanted from her. She hadn’t appeared to have dropped anything while she was walking, so that wasn’t it. Then he spoke to her, saying, "I saw that you have a martial artist's body. Do you, by chance, know any martial arts?" She hadn’t really expected to hear that question from him. Guess for somebody that also practiced martial arts, the particular type of toning in her arms and legs would be recognizable. She turned to face him fully. ”Yep, I do. Have since I was 5.” Leiko had progressed with martial arts rather quickly her entire life; so much so that she had earned a particularly high title. However, it wasn’t something she liked to brag about to people, so she failed to mention just what degree of black belt she had earned. For the moment, Leiko continued to stand there since she wasn’t sure if there would be a follow up question to this or not. At the very least, she was curious. Yep, I do. Have since I was 5.
Kenji blinked in surprise. He started a bit after her when it came to his training (although he trained with two styles rather than just one). She didn't brag about her skills or what degree of martial arts she was though - Kenji didn't think so. Leiko rarely spoke, and she didn't seem like the type to brag.
Although... he had a very strong feeling that she was extremely skillful.
"Well, I'm just wondering. Do you mind if we spar? Practicing by one's self is good but it can only get one so far," he said. Since coming to this island, he hadn't really met any good martial artists. There was his cousin Hayate, who was very skilled at aikido, but that was it. He needed to fight more varied opponents.
On purpose he didn't ask what style or degree she was in. He needed to be used to identifying styles by sight and feel alone. After all, not all of his opponents were going to give the courtesy of telling him what style they used - unless they were braggarts, in which case Kenji usually mopped the floor with them within seconds. A general trend in more powerful martial artists is that they usually remain quiet about their skills, letting their attacks do the talking. As stated once, 'A wise man knows but does not speak. A fool speaks what he does not know.'
At any rate, he awaited her reply. His 'student' might end up becoming his first friend outside his family - though he didn't quite realize it yet. Kenji was a very solitary person and really didn't know what having friends is like, preferring to bury himself in books and research. how very typical of him.

Just as she had expected, Kenji did have a question to follow up to his question. She continued to stand there, clothes in her hands, towel around her neck, as she waited for him to speak. "Well, I'm just wondering. Do you mind if we spar? Practicing by one's self is good but it can only get one so far,"
She nodded, knowing that to be true. Because of her more advanced skill, she never really got any serious practice in. Her individual training didn’t give the same advantages that sparring with somebody would. And Kenji remained something of an enigma... Perhaps sparring with him would prove to be a bit of a challenge. With a shrug, Leiko said, ”Alright, sure.” She moved to go and set her towel back down on the rock. She pulled on her shorts and tank top fairly quickly overtop of her wet bathing suit. When she was dressed, she moved to stand in front, moving into the correct starting stance. Before moving, though, she said to him, ”And just to make this a bit more interesting... If I end up pinning you, then we have to start calling each other by our first names. After all, you’re not my teacher anymore.” It was a small stake, but it couldn’t hurt to offer up something as an end result. From her stance, she waited patiently for him to make the first move. It was he who had extended the offer of a sparring match, after all. Alright, sure.
Kenji nodded and readied himself. He allowed any tension he felt, any stress, to flow away and be replaced by a cool, calm clarity. That was how he started most fights. In what time he was given, he put himself into a mental state of calm. Emotions clouded one's judgement and sight. In a fight, they could not be used. Only tactics and logic prevailed.
When she slipped on her clothes (which were probably now wet because she put them over her swimsuit) and went into her fighting stance, he went into his own stance as well, starting with the long-range Piguaquan. However, it didn't seem like that she was going to simply fight.
And just to make this a bit more interesting... If I end up pinning you, then we have to start calling each other by our first names. After all, you’re not my teacher anymore.
He considered, then shrugged. "Fair enough," he replied. Indeed, he wasn't her teacher, so there was no reason to address each other by last name or with titles. And besides, it wasn't like he was keeping his name a secret unlike his cousin who otherwise would have fans chasing him everywhere. And it was jsut a pin - how bad could it be?
She waited patiently, and as a challenger, Kenji knew that he had to attack. Not exactly his style - he preferred playing defensively, which fight his philosophy of fighting only when necessary. However, they couldn't remain at a standstill forever, so he decided to take the initiative.
With that, he charged with surprising speed. He raised one arm when he got close enough, open palm, and brought it down to smash Leiko. The basis of Piguaquan was to use acceleration from rotation, turning his arm into whips... if she got hit by it, it would leave a pretty heavy bruise. And that was only because Kenji was holding back.

After waiting patiently, Kenji finally made the first move. Just from his natural stance, plus what she’d observed of his training earlier, she got the feeling he was more comfortable being on the defensive than the offensive. Of course, no martial artist was only adapt at fighting from one end of the spectrum, though defensive was usually the preferred medium for those who decide to learn. He came towards her, with impressive power and speed, and her muscles instantly felt the usual rush of power that came before a sparring match. He then began to bring one hand down towards her, and her fighting instincts kicked in instantly. She herself brought a hand up, stopping his arm by the elbow, her grip both tight enough and in the proper position that he wouldn’t be able to bend his arm down so his attack would reach her. At the same time, she squatted down, and while she extended a leg out to try and take out his legs, while bringing up her free hand, fisted, towards his stomach. She moved with such speed and grace, it was clear she was practiced at these skills. Whether the attacks landed or not, when she was free of the first one because of moving closer to the sand, she used the hand that had been on his elbow to push off the sand, lifting herself up, almost in a quarter-cartwheel fashion so her leg that had moved to kick him hit the sand first, her second leg straightening afterwards, so she’d be standing behind where he had previously been. Once standing, she brought a hand up, this time taking her turn on the offensive, taking the side of her flat hand and aiming for a spot on his shoulder before the crook of his neck. That way she wouldn’t hit any important nerves but would still leave quite the bruise if it landed properly.

Kenji didn't expect that first blow to land so easily. Indeed, Leiko caught his arm as it was coming down, nullifying his attack and making sure he couldn't do a follow-up. Although Kenji didn't display it, he inwardly smiled. Good - it would turn out that she would be a good sparring partner.
When she squatted to take down his legs, Kenji rapidly responded by deflecting her kick with one of his own, and using his free hand to block the hit to his gut. She was good - she didn't hesitate to find ways to incapacitate him by hitting him in the legs or stomach. Then again, that was what martial arts was about.
Leiko had quickly moved back and attempted to strike the crook of his shoulder and neck. A pressure point strike? Not bad. But unfortunately, not enough. Kenji twisted to the side, and the blow flew past him. Time for his own counterattack.
Switching straight into Bajiquan, he moved in close, ramming Leiko with his shoulder, then spinning around and following up with an elbow blow, moved by momentum. He spun once more and finished with a two fisted strike right into her body, powerful enough to shove her away as well.
Deciding not to give Leiko any breathing room to recover, he used Piguaquan and rushed in, first swinging one of his arms down to the crook of her own neck to hit the pressure point, then swinging his other arm to hit her in the side. He didn't simply swing, though - he used movements in his waist to accelerate his movements, causing blood to rush into his arms and reinforcing their strength. Both attacks would leave nasty bruises if they hit. He then finished off with a low kick that would knock her to the ground.
Kenji knew, if he was to last, he shouldn't pull his punches too much.

”... Hah.”
That was the only thing close to a word that came out of her mouth as she stood there, her arm strong across the top of Kenji’s chest, over his collarbone, pressing hard only to hold him against the rock wall of the higher part of the cove. They’d moved a good distance during their sparring match, and it only benefitted her. She hadn’t used her power at all, but still managed to be brought closer to a bit of earth’s structure here in Pirate’s Cove. And it had clearly helped. She continued to stand there, panting, now sweaty from all the activity, pinning Kenji to the rock’s service. Slowly, a smile formed over her lips as she continued to stare Kenji in the face.
”There. Now I hope you’ll hold up your end of the bargain... Kenji.”
With that, her smile turned into a smirk, and she moved back from the rock wall, releasing Kenji, still a bit out of breath. ”Well, that was actually fun. Thanks for the practice.” she said to him. If anything, now that they were on a first-name basis, she felt like the two of them could easily become friends. As she continued to catch her breath, she realized just how thirsty she was. It was something of a tease, with a large body of water being so close by, full of an undrinkable substance. It really wasn’t fair. [/blockquote][/blockquote] tagged: Kenji words: 247 inspiration: ‘Bedazzled’ notes: Bleh XP credit: DUCK DUCK'S NOT A GOOSE at Caution 2.0. Leiko proved to be a master combatant, and in spite of Kenji's fighting skills, he was forced to give ground. But Kenji wasn't frustrated or angry - in fact, he had a feeling elation, one that came usually from research. The feeling that he had finally found a decent sparring partner to train with during his time on this Island. It kept going until...
... Hah.
Taking deep breaths, Kenji found himself pinned against a rock, with Leiko's arm pressing across his chest. She was close up against him... very close... he could practically feel the warmth of her body. Suddenly, he felt heat come into his face, and not from the fighting. What... what was he thinking?
There. Now I hope you’ll hold up your end of the bargain... Kenji.
"Yes of course, Leiko," he said, giving a slight smile as she backed off. It had been a very long time since anyone was able to pin him. True, he could've actually gotten himself out of it, and was already preparing a counter, but fair was fair. She pinned him, no two ways about it.
Well, that was actually fun. Thanks for the practice.
Kenji nodded respectfully back in response. "Thank you as well. It's been a while since I had a good sparring partner." With every truth. Good sparring partners were few and far in between for someone at Kenji's caliber. And it felt like the respect was mutual. However, Kenji was starting to feel thirsty. Probably from the exercise.
"I'll go get us some drinks," he told Leiko. Then he headed off to a concession stand nearby to grab some water for them.

Hearing Kenji say her first name for the first time gave her an odd sense of satisfaction. She’d clearly claimed her prize, and was quite happy about it. Since she didn’t really get to spar much when it was a real challenge for her, she was pretty tuckered out from this encounter. Kenji then said to her, "Thank you as well. It's been a while since I had a good sparring partner"
, and Leiko merely smiled in reply. Slowly, her breathing rate was returning to normal, and her heart was calming in her chest. It was good that she’d been swimming mere minutes ago; it left her still feeling oddly refreshed. "I'll go get us some drinks.” he then offered, and she waved a bit as he began walking off, saying a quick, ”Thanks! as she watched him go. While she was left there alone, a gentle breeze blew past, and with how overheated her body felt from such a workout, it was quite refreshing. Leiko knew that if she got up a bit higher, the air would be even more enjoyable. Looking over, there were some large boulder-like rocks with various ridges that stacked in an odd way, almost on top of each other, getting higher and higher. It wouldn’t be all that hard to climb up them. Walking over, she lifted herself over a rock at a time, moving higher and higher until she reached a good enough height. She looked out towards the horizon for a moment, enjoying the feel of the cool sea mist being blown along with the wind. It was even more refreshing than she had felt before. Just as she moved to look towards the land behind her, her foot fumbled near the edge of the rock. With both the rock surface being slippery from the water and her foot being slippery from both water and sand, there wasn’t really enough friction to keep her stable. Her foot slipped, and her leg sunk back down to the surface of the lower rock, but not without the sharper edges of the rock catching her leg. She cried out a bit from the initial pain, and managed to catch herself before she fell further. Looking at the rock, she noticed an area of red rock, and was confused. Then she looked down at her leg, which was bleeding profusely. She cursed, and that was when the wind picked up again, spraying salt water mist onto her and her leg. Getting salt in the wound made for a whole other world of pain, and she cried out even louder, gripping her knee since she couldn’t grip the top of her leg without it sending jolts of pain throughout the whole left side of her body. Kenji bought two bottles of water at a concession stand nearby. Kenji had plenty of pocket money - he made a good amount from his job as a researcher (of course, he wasn't the type to steal grant money for research) and his parents kept giving him money to support him overseas, despite his insistance that he didn't need the money. Oh well. Loving parents - can't be helped.
As he went back to the beach, he had a feeling something was wrong. Kenji didn't often rely on intuition or instinct, but the few times that he did haven't lied to him at all. As he approached Leiko, he could see her clutching her leg. Red was seeping through her hands...
Kenji instantly dropped his bottles and ran to Leiko. "Let me see that," he said, removing her hands from the wound... he scowled, which was one of the biggest expression of emotions he had probably shown thus far. Damn... this injury was serious. He didn't have any bandages on hand so...
He took off his t-shirt. His hand glowed with a dark aura and he carefully moved his finger across it, cutting it apart. Using the fabric of the t-shirt, he bandaged Leiko's leg to cut the wound from open air and to stop (or at least slow) the blood flow. As he's wrapping her up, though, he couldn't help but stroke her skin with his hands. Smooth, warm, and powerful to the touch, though the last one was probably because of her being a martial artist.
He turned red as thoughts that he nearly never had entered his mind. He shook his head. It had been a long, long, LONG time since such thoughts came to him. But he had to ignore it for now. He took her leg in his hands and took a look at it, trying to find if there were any other wounds or somethign he had missed. Doing so, he could feel her skin better, and her muscles... and he felt his face burn with embarrassment at his own thoughts. He shook them otu of his head and calmed down before speaking.
"We better get you to a doctor to take care of that," Kenji said, standing up. "It'd be best if you stay off that leg, but how to get you there..."
