Well... I’ve just got a small job right now. I temp at different places around town; mainly I tend the snack bar at the public pool. Just haven’t found any place that’s a good enough fit yet.
Koryu nodded. A jack of all trades, master of none. He didn't mind people like that - some just had to go all over the place to find something they liked doing. Koryu was always interested in business, so being a financial officer was right up his alley. Of course, he despised those who used... unsavory business practices to get what they want.
So do you work at one of those really cheesy agencies with your name plastered on mugs and Frisbees and flyers scattered everywhere?
He chuckled at that, getting the joke. "I wouldn't say mugs and frisbees, but yes, I do sell houses and they sometimes have my picture on the fliers," he replied, smiling. "Though really, it's kind of embarrassing to have my pictures on fliers or anywhere," he said, giving a small embarrased grin and rubbing the back of his neck.
Koryu was also modest and didn't like having his picture taken. Go figure.

Stefani nodded, moving her water bottle to the other hand. "Though really, it's kind of embarrassing to have my pictures on fliers or anywhere," Stefani couldn’t help but smile a bit more. Clearly Koryu was embarrassed, and it was a very cute look on him. He even rubbed the back of his neck, and in that moment he looked a lot younger than he probably was, like he was about her age. ”Bet it must be weird to see people sitting on your face as they’re waiting for the bus.” she commented, laughing a bit at her second joke. As she sat there, she could hear the song change over to another one, and... yep, she knew this one as well. The one playing now was another one of her favourites. Perhaps it was just her lucky night in more ways than one. ”While I’m not the type that likes going to places like this... I really like dancing. Even if there’s a bunch of people around, it seems to be one of the few places where you can just dance for as long as you want, even if it’s until 2 in the morning.” Dancing was her current method of stress release. And when she had to come to the club to keep her sister from doing anything stupid, it could get a bit stressful. As she continued to listen to the song, she decided to follow her instincts; there was something she wanted to request of Koryu, and even if he didn’t seem like the type, she knew that she was, and what was the point at lying anymore about who she was? If she was no longer appealing to him, then he could always go. Standing up suddenly, setting her water bottle down on the bench, she smiled excitedly at Koryu and said, ”Dance with me again!”

Bet it must be weird to see people sitting on your face as they’re waiting for the bus.
Koryu smiled and shrugged. Truthfully, he came across things like that quite often. It disturbed him at first, but he quickly got used to it. The fliers, after all, were simply pieces of paper, nothing more. Of course, it didn't help his... aversion to photos, but still, that couldn't be helped.
While I’m not the type that likes going to places like this... I really like dancing. Even if there’s a bunch of people around, it seems to be one of the few places where you can just dance for as long as you want, even if it’s until 2 in the morning.
Koryu nodded. Honestly, he didn't like these types of dances. He preferred more... elegant dancing. Like the gentleman he was. He had been plenty of those kinds of dances when he was still working back in Japan at his real job, and he found them better than... these dance floors. Well, he always did try new things.
Dance with me again!
He blinked with surprise. She seemed so energetic about it... he could hardly refuse. He gave a wider smile and said simply, "Alright," and began dancing with her.
With that, they begun dancing again, him matching her rhythm just fine. However... it began to feel boring to him. This wasn't his style. So he would just have to introduce his style right in. With a small smile, he took Stef's hands, and twirled her in a classical dance. Soon, he was dancing with her, matching the tempo of the song.
He was undoubtedly an expert gentleman.

he told her, and he soon stood up with her, and her own smile widened. Perhaps she was a bit childish, and it was requests like this that made it show. But if he was going to stick around anyway, might as well let him know what he’s in for. They started dancing normally enough, much like they had been when he approached her at the club. They moved to the beat of the song they could hear well enough, and it was just as fun as it had been back then, perhaps better because it wasn’t crowded anymore. They were currently confined by the glass walls of the atrium, but neither of them were particularly wild dancers, so she didn’t feel all that confined, and she doubted he felt that way either. Then, out of the blue, Koryu took her hands in his, and just as she was about to ask him what he was doing, when suddenly she found herself being twirled and pulled closer to him, so they were dancing in a completely different way. Like they were waltzing to a classical orchestra playing nearby. Except they were still moving to the tempo of this current song, and once Stefani got the hang of the change, she smiled wildly, moving around with Koryu leading. Soon she was twirled again, but away from Koryu’s body, and Stef ended up stumbling a bit, and her hand slipped from his and she stumbled a few steps back, so she was no longer in the atrium and was standing on the deserted road. Her body had coincidentally been twirled through the opening of the atrium. Looking at Koryu, she laughed a bit at her little screw-up. She hadn’t ended up falling over, and it was pretty funny, when she thought about it. While she was laughing, however, her body began to be illuminated by a beautiful, white light. Stefani still laughed, not noticing the transport truck headed right towards her, even though she was being bathed in the light from the truck’s headlights.

And they danced, Koryu twirling Stefani again and again, the both of them having the time of their lives. He even had a bright grin as they continued to dance, waltzing to the high beat from the outside. This was so fun. He twirled her away from him, but she stumbled, lost her grasp and ended up in the middle of the road. He chuckled too... until he quickly noticed the truck barreling toward her. It was moving too fast for anyone to save.
Anyone except Koryu.
Instantly, time seemed to slow down around him. Koryu's ability was super speed, and it affected more than his body - he practiced enough that even his reaction speed his increased to inhuman levels. Now, most people imagined super speed to be him running extremely fast, but that wasn't exactly it for Koryu. He could move his limbs to inhumanly fast levels without straining them... and he knew some Japanese techniques that were believed to be legendary.
Like shinsoku. Literally, 'god-speed'.
Leaning his body forward, he dashed toward Stefani, taking as wide steps as possible. His motion was nothing but a blur to any observers, but for Koryu, he could still tell everything just fine as if though he was running at a normal speed. He quickly caught her , holding her close to him in an embrace so he didn't lose her, and dashed to the other side of the rode, the truck barely missing them. He skidded to a halt - building up such speed meant stopping was usually an issue. He was working on that.
"Are you alright?" he asked her, watching the truck drive away.

She didn’t even notice the truck headed towards her until it was too late. One minute she was turning her head towards the light, just catching the truck in the corner of her eye. The next minute, she was suddenly enveloped by odd warmth, and she realized that she was now standing on the sidewalk of the opposite side of the street. Stefani barely had time to lose her breath, let alone catch it. When she realized what happened, or what had nearly happened, she looked up in shock, only to realize that the odd warmth was coming from Koryu’s arms wrapped around her. She then looked around, realizing that there’s no possible way he could’ve run to her so quickly, let alone gotten them so far in such a short time... And that’s when it hit her just how he did it. "Are you alright?" he asked her, and Stef’s eyes focused on him again. When she was able to process the question in her head, a moment too late, she nodded her head, and quietly said, ”I’m fine.” It was taking her a moment to process that she’d just witnessed what Koryu’s power was, but when she did she smiled up at him, not moving away from him at all, and she said, ”Guess there’s no point in asking you what brings you to the island – now I know.” Everybody here on this island, more or less, was gifted or plagued by some sort of odd power, allowing them to control things and see things normal humans weren’t able to see and control. It scared people; that’s why they’d been sent here in the first place. Being one of these special people herself, Stefani didn’t show confusion or disgust at what Koryu had to do to help her; merely a bit of happiness that she’d been able to figure it out. She found herself oddly curious sometimes what people’s powers were, but she knew better than to be nosy. Looking back at the side of the road that she’d stumbled on, she knew that if Koryu hadn’t been there, and didn’t have his particular power, she might be in a much more critical state right now. Hell, she might not even be alive. Looking back up at Koryu, she gave a simple, ”Thank you.” And while she hadn’t said much, she knew that the simplicity and the feelings behind the words spoke louder than an entire monologue of gratitude would. And still, she didn’t move out of his arms.

I’m fine.
Koryu nodded. In truth, his heart was pounding, but not from exhaustion. If he had been one second slow, if he had hesitated for even one more moment, Stefani would've died right in front of him when he could have prevented it. Judging from the speed the truck was going, unless she could intantly regenerate, such a crash would be fatal.
Guess there’s no point in asking you what brings you to the island – now I know.
He smiled and shrugged. Indeed, he had super speed, but he never regretted having such an 'insignificant' power, like his friends who could manipulate the very elements. Any power could be strong, given the right training and circumstances. And the Light of Shadows was very tolerant of specials - in fact, they accepted specials wholeheartedly, thanks to the head of the organization.
Thanks.
Indeed, the gratitude conveyed was expressed in one word, which Koryu fully understood and accepted. He gave a small smile and nodded. "You're welcome." Then he noticed one little fact - Stefani is saved. So why was he still hugging her? Well, talk about awkward.
Koryu then let go of her with an embarrassed smile now. "Sorry about that, that must have been an odd situation," he said, rubbing the back of his neck again.

was all Koryu said to her, keeping it simple much like she had. As she looked at the small smile he gave her, one single thought entered her mind. So this must be how damsels in distress feel after they’re saved... After that, she blinked a bit to snap herself out of it. Just then, Koryu also began to look a bit awkward, and it was only after he let go of her that she realized they had still been standing awfully close to each other. "Sorry about that, that must have been an odd situation” he then said to her, and she laughed a bit nervously after that. ”Yeah, almost dying and being saved within a few milla-seconds would be weird to anyone.” Just then, she happened to hear something coming from the entrance to the club, where the bouncers were situated. It was a bit of drunken, stumbled laughter – and she knew exactly who it belonged to. Looking at Koryu, apologetically, she said, ”Um, I’ll be right back, one second...” With that, she walked around the building, where Koryu wouldn’t see her, towards the main door, where her sister was clinging to one of the bouncers. ”Sooo, what time do you get off work?” she asked one of the bouncers, and they looked as if they really didn’t want to deal with a drunk girl hitting on them right now. Stefani quickly came over, saying, [b ”Sorry guys, she’s with me, I’ll take her from here...” Just taking one look at Stefani, then back at Andrea, they knew that they definitely knew each other. Moving to support her twin sister, Stef noticed that she had her jacket draped over her one arm. ”Heeey... sistaaaa!” Andrea slurred, and Stef recoiled a bit at the stench of her breath. Just then, her head fell forward and she vomited by the base of a nearby tree. Stef jumped back at first, then she moved to hold her hair back until she was done, then took her sister’s jacket out of her hands. ”Okay then, let’s get you home...” Stef said to her, and they began stumbling a bit when Andrea moved to steal back her coat, and she unfolded it to drape it over her head, hiding her face and hair. ”Don’t luk at me, I’m ssso assamed... I almost barfed on my shoes...” Stef just patted her back as they kept walking, rounding the building and near the parking lot, saying, ”Okay, we’ll just get you to the car and you can lay in the back with a barf bag...” Coming around the building, she walked with her sister, who’s head was still hidden from sight. When she came upon Koryu, on the way to where they parked, she said, ”I’m sorry, Koryu, but my sister’s had one too many, I need to get her home.” Stefani looked apologetically towards her new acquaintance. It was a shame; somebody she could have a conversation with so easily, and she didn’t have the time to get to know him any better... Not that it mattered, she knew this would happen; otherwise she wouldn’t have lied about her age. There was no turning back now. ”It was nice to meet you.” she told him, again with a genuine tone to her voice, and then she continued supporting her sister towards where their car was.

Yeah, almost dying and being saved within a few milliseconds would be weird to anyone.
Koryu chuckled. Okay, true. Still, he was happy that he managed to reach her in time. Koryu was glad of his powers. The time he discovered his powers... was also the one time they weren't of any use. He had decided then and there never to let his power be useless again. Then he heard the noise from the front, and Stefani said,
Um, I’ll be right back, one second...
He nodded and waited patiently. Sounds of someone throwing up... the only reason Stefani would probably leave was her sister that she told him about earlier. And sure enough, she came around the corner to the parking lot. He couldn't see Stefani's sister very clear, as her head was covered by her hair and it was rather dark out.
I’m sorry, Koryu, but my sister’s had one too many, I need to get her home.
Nodding understandingly, he moved to the car where he opened it as soon as she unlocked it to allow her sister in. He also opened the driver's side for Stefani. That was Koryu - the perfect gentleman no matter what. And besides, he figured she might need a little help, carrying a drunken sister and all.
It was nice to meet you.
Koryu smiled and nodded. "Likewise. Have a good evening, Stefani," he said kindly. Then he turned to leave. But he forgot one last thing... Turning back to Stefani, he asked her, "Do you have a phone number that I can contact you?" It was rare to meet a decent, level-headed girl these days, particularly one at his age (and she didn't fool him - he knew she was younger than him), so he might as well find out.

That she hardly expected. She nearly stopped walking as she processed his request. Again, she knew he wasn’t trying to ask her out, even if that’s normally what asking for one’s phone number would imply. However, Stef knew not to stop, since it would make her sister incredibly cranky, and it wasn’t like she could really start any kind of friendship with Koryu when she’d already lied to him. Since she wouldn’t really see him again... it couldn’t hurt to come clean. ”I can’t, Koryu.” Stefani called to Koryu as she kept walking, her head turned back to look at him. ”Honestly... I’m not really a temp. I only have the one job, and I’m still in high school. Given our ages, it’s probably not appropriate.” And Stef continued walking, hearing her sister mumble, almost into the coat covering her head, ”I don’t feel good...” Stef just sighed, rubbing her sister’s back as they kept walking. Soon, they reached the car, a large amount of distance between them and where Koryu was still standing – she doubted she could hear him all that clearly on the first try if he were to say anything else to her.

I can’t, Koryu. Honestly... I’m not really a temp. I only have the one job, and I’m still in high school. Given our ages, it’s probably not appropriate.
Ah, there was THAT little issue. Well, both of them got in via... less than legal means. He got in merely because his coworkers pulled some strings. And it wasn't even to a place he liked. Well, since she came clean, he might as well. He noticed that she was relatively far away at the car. Might as well get closer.
He braced his legs and dashed over to where she was, coming to a halt near her at the car. Well, that was simple enough. Now they could talk a bit better as she helped her sister into the car.
"Well, then it seems we are both in the same boat," he told her, still smiling kindly. "I'm only 19 years old myself, so I guess it works out. However, if you're still reluctant to give out any information, I can understand."

”Alright, Andy, nice and easy...” Stefani said as she slowly lowered her sister into the back seat of the car. She still had the jacket over her head, and it was acting as a bit of a blanket to keep her warm as she laid in the backseat. She was about to close the door and then get into the driver’s seat, when she heard footsteps and watched as Koryu ran towards her, at a normal speed this time, so he could continue talking to her. It confused her though, because she thought he’d be upset, or even disgusted, when he found out she was still in high school and had been in that club. But the first thing he said when he approached was, "Well, then it seems we are both in the same boat.”, and that just confused her even more. "I'm only 19 years old myself, so I guess it works out. However, if you're still reluctant to give out any information, I can understand." He was 19?! She never would’ve guessed... He had such a mature air about him, he easily came off as being in his early to mid 20s, maybe even late 20s, the age appropriate for being in real estate. When she thought about it, she figured that he probably lied about his job too, like she had about being a temp. Just then, she smiled a bit glad that they also had this in common with each other. She then closed the back door and open the driver’s side door, but didn’t sit down. Instead, she reached in to grab something clipped to the top mirror. Pulling a pen out of the car, she uncapped it and said, ”Here,” while gesturing for him to come closer. When he approached her. She took his right arm, and wrote her name and address on his arm. She didn’t write down her number, and she wasn’t sure why – maybe just to be different, or maybe to express that she liked that this was different than a guy getting a girl’s digits. Looking up when she was done, she said, ”There. Now when your work buddies see that, they won’t bug you about tonight at all.” She smirked a bit when she looked up at him, then she moved to finally sit behind the wheel of the car. Looking at him, she said, ”See you around.” And after a small wave, she closed the car door and started the car, pulling out of the parking space and driving away. * * * * * * * * * * ”You know that boy that walked you to the car the other night at the club?” Andrea asked on a different afternoon, brushing through her hair as she stared at her reflection in the full-length mirror in the corner of the room, glancing towards her sister where she was, sitting on her bed, reading a book. ”He was pretty cute.” Stefani then glanced over at her sister, confused. ”How would you know? You were drunk and hiding in your coat.” Still brushing her hair, she said, ”Oh. I snuck a peak while I was lying in the car.” Stefani shrugged, and went back to her book. ”Where is this coming from anyway? That happened over a week ago.” Andy’s turn to shrug, she tossed her hairbrush onto her own bed and reached over to grab a tube of clear lip gloss, applying it over her plump lips while looking at herself in the mirror. ”I dunno, I only remembered it just now. Not like it’ll matter, probably won’t see him again, you were weird and gave him your address instead of your cell number, right?” Stef bit her lip a bit, still trying to read, but having trouble focusing on the words. Maybe it hadn’t been the right thing to do after all... But she’d gone with her gut instinct, no matter how odd it might’ve been. Just then, Stef finally got back to reading, and closed her book. ”Shouldn’t have read that so quickly... Now I’m stuck until the next time I go to the mall...” Always quick to help out her sister, she said, ”Well, there’s always the paper, right? I’ll go grab the mail.” And with that she headed out of their shared bedroom and then walked down the stairs, towards the front door. She walked out onto the front porch, keeping the door open. She went to the mailbox by the door, pulling out the newspaper, but she looked to see what else was there. She flipped through some junk mail, then noticed that some magazines had come in. There was Reader’s Digest, which belonged to their brother, and her sister’s subscription to Psychology Today. Andy then smiled when her own magazine came up. ”Yay, Cosmo!” she whispered to herself, reading the headlines of the magazine, still standing on the front porch.

Here.
Koryu looked in surprise as she pushed up his sleeve and wrote on his arm. Well, this he hadn't been expecting. He had been expecting a phone number on a piece of paper, but not her name and address on his arm. And... was that permanent ink? This would take a while to come off. Well, enough time to write it on something more permanent.
There. Now when your work buddies see that, they won’t bug you about tonight at all.
He chuckled. Okay, thanks to her, he now had a bit of an alibi if one of his coworkers decided to bring up why he disappeared. He normally wore long-sleeved t-shirts so it would be hidden rather easily. Nevertheless, the sooner he got if off, the better.
See you around.
He simply smiled and nodded. "See you, Stefani." With that, he tensed his legs, and sped off, practicing his shinsoku technique on the way home. How long would it be before he mastered shunpo or shukuchi...?
-----------
A week later, Koryu was on his way to the address Stefani had given him when they parted. He had been busy with work, and today was almost more or less the soonest time he would be available. He had already written down the address on a sticky note and posted it on his computer so he would have a nice little reminder. The address on his arm had been washed off a long while ago.
He didn't have to run, considering they lived in the same neighborhood (coincidentally, his two friends also lived around here). Walking over, he checked the address and Google Map he had printed out, then the house. Well, this was the place. He walked toward it and saw Stefani standing on the porch.
"Hello, Stefani. It's been a while," he said, his pleasant smile showing. Then he saw the magazine and raised an eyebrow, but his smile didn't falter. "I can see you have... interesting reading choices," he added.

Glancing up, she instantly recognized the guy from the club that had been hitting on her sister and asking for her number the other night. Andy smiled, only because she’d forgotten just how good he looked. Having been drunk and all, plus in the back of the car, she hadn’t gotten the best look at him. He then continued to smile as he looked at her magazine and as he said, "I can see you have... interesting reading choices.”, and that’s when Andy realized that he must not have seen her that night, or he would’ve asked which sister he was talking to instead of just assuming it was Stefani. Smiling, getting ready to play the character of her sister, she decided that she’d play along and see where it let her. Smacking him playfully with the magazine, she said, ”Hey, don’t judge me; There’s some pretty interesting health and beauty tips in here, I’ll have you know.” while laughing a bit. Her cheeks were also tinted pink, just the right amount of blushing for her to come off as a bashful teenage girl, flirting with a guy she liked. She then put down the magazines and the rest of the mail, mainly to hide the nerdy magazine underneath Cosmo, and then crossed her arms as she looked up at Koryu, leaning against the wall near the door and saying, ”So what brings you here today, just in the neighbourhood?” She knew that her sister had given him their address, but it was still relevant to ask if there was a particular reason he was here on this specific occasion. After all, the more background she got, the better; all she knew was that he was 19 and had a thing for her sister.

Hey, don’t judge me; There’s some pretty interesting health and beauty tips in here, I’ll have you know.
Koryu gave a small chuckle. Maybe, maybe. He never read those magazines before. He never even considered touching them, so he wouldn't know. But he had heard of Cosmo from reputation and know what it usually entailed. Quite frankly, he was surprised that it could be legally sold in so many public stores. Well, whatever. Couldn't be that bad.
So what brings you here today, just in the neighborhood?
He smiled. "Well, considering that I live around here, I guess you could say so," he said pleasantly. "But if I was just passing by, then no. I just came to visit you today, Stefani. I'm sorry I couldn't visit any earlier, but I had a bit of a busy schedule." Koryu was always the gentleman. If he looked for a date (not that often), he treated the girl with the utmost respect. Not like a certain rock star who also lived nearby....
"So, how have you been doing?" he asked looking kindly at her. "I do hope I haven't kept you waiting. If I have, again, I apologize."
