history;;
Harvard and Mamoru met during Harvard’s business trip in Japan, and instantly fell in love. When Mamoru announced that she was pregnant, Harvard couldn’t be more thrilled. They immediately got married and moved to his home in Buffalo, NY. 9 months later, Leiko Dawson was born.
She more or less had a regular childhood. She learned Japanese from her mother, but grew up with English as her main language. Other than having the tendency to eat dirt as a child, she was like all the other children. Maybe a bit more independent than a typical child, who is always demanding their parents’ attention, but she was kind and smart, not to mention healthy, which was all her parents could ask for. At the age of 5 she was enrolled in martial arts, and proceeded to move through the ranks and continue to build up her skill. Another skill she picked up from a very young age was Japanese flower arranging, a skill her mother had been learning back home before she got married. They had a cat named Snuff, with dark fur and even darker stripes, almost like a tiger, and Leiko loved him a great deal. Whom she loved even more was who arrived into her family when she was 12 years old; her sister Isabelle.
Things started to get weird around the time Leiko turned 14 in July. She heard voices when she slept, and developed a habit of sleepwalking. She would almost always wake up in the meadow a mile away from their home. It had always been her favourite place to play as a child; she loved the smell of the flowers and the grass together. One odd thing she noticed was that when her favourite tree near her house had been cut down, she cried for almost a week straight. Probably the biggest moment that made her realize that something was wrong was when a bat from the attic happened to escape when her father was taking some suit cases out of the attic and got into her room, while Leiko was trying her best to kill it, a tree branch, out of nowhere, jabbed through the glass of her window, stabbing it right through its middle, retracting afterwards. Leiko was stunned, and could barely explain the broken glass, blood on the carpet, and the cut on her hand caused by flying glass.
She began to go to the meadow more and more when she was out of school, and slowly began to expand on this new ability she had. She started out small, pushing blades of grass out further and further from the earth, causing closed flowers to bloom. She even managed to turn a maple tree into a sakura (cherry blossom) tree, bearing down beautiful, pink petals. She was thrilled about her new secret power that she’d received out of nowhere. Until it all went to hell, of course.
One night, when her parents were away to see a play, Leiko was babysitting her 2 year-old sister. And she wouldn’t stop crying, and she had to study for a math test, and it was driving her crazy. At one point Leiko went into her sister’s room just to tell her off, even if she wouldn’t really understand her, when suddenly something like tree roots grew out of the wood of her crib, wrapping around her limbs and even her neck. Leiko panicked, not sure what to do. Luckily, her parents came home at that moment, and unravelled the roots from Isabelle before she was suffocated. While her mother took Isabelle to the hospital, her father was shocked and disgusted with his own daughter. He even made a call to report his daughter to the proper government channels so her departure to Cashile Island could be arranged.
Leiko could hardly believe the betrayal. Her father was still enraged, seeing his daughter as some kind of weird creature; a freak. Deciding to remind her of the creature he was, much like he’d done to their cat Snuff, he took a branding iron and burned the shape of an X into her skin, over her heart. He went to press the iron in as far as he could but her mother returned in time and stopped him from killing her. But she couldn’t approach Leiko the same way either. And so Leiko was sent to Cashile Island, and enrolled into St. Brendan’s academy which was located there.
Her mother, still feeling a fraction of kindness towards her daughter, secretly arranged for her to live with the family of an old friend who was living there, the Kondo’s. Living with the Kondo’s for a while, she soon began to grow attached to them, since they loved her despite her abnormal abilities. She arranged it so Mrs. Kondo would legally adopt her, and wasn’t surprised when both her parents mailed back the paperwork with all the proper signatures; she was officially out of their lives.

Leiko opened her eyes after stepping through her portal to meet a similar pitch black darkness that surrounded her on all sides. Apparently while the day had just begun in Traverse town, constant night sky and all, in a world where the sun made its usual appearance it was currently the middle of the night again. If anything, it just made her worry even more about the safety of her family. She wanted to set aside the fears that had arisen because of her dream as soon as possible, so she used her air element to disappear out of sight from where she stood randomly in the middle of the deserted market and then reappeared in front of her family's home in the poor district.
She opened the door quietly with her own personal key, and then locked the door behind herself. A hand stayed on the hilt of one of her Kris daggers in case there was any threat currently present in the residence. She looked around the room she was in that functioned as a kitchen, living room and dining room all in one for a family of three. It was small, sparcely furnished, but no so bad compared to the bedroom. The door to the bedroom was currently closed, and Leiko moved quietly, so as not to alert any intruders of her arrival. And then she opened the door, swiftly, a hand gripping the handle of one of her weapons. And she breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that nobody threatening was in the room.
There was Mrs. Kondo and Yuuka, asleep on futons on the floor in the far corner near the closet. And on the large bed which the three of them took turns using was little Kisa, deep in slumber just like her mother and grandmother. Leiko smiled, and moved quietly in the room. She looked down at little Kisa, noticing that her hair was a lot darker than the last time she'd seen her. It seemed to be getting darker and darker each time she came around to visit. She wondered if maybe her hair would end up as raven black as her mother's. Or even as dark as Raps' hair was... And she shook her head to get Raps out of her mind. The last thing she wanted to think about was their less than cordial meeting.
As Leiko touched her niece's hair, the girl stirred slightly, and opened her beautiful big eyes and glanced up sleepily at who was standing before her. She seemed to wake up considerably when she realized who she was looking at. "Leiko!" she exclaimed in an excited whisper, and Leiko sat on the edge of the bed as Kisa threw her arms around her aunt in a big hug. Leiko hugged her tightly and whispered to her, "My goodness, you're getting so big... I shouldn't have woken you up, go back to sleep." She was about to let go when Kisa's grip tightened around her, and she noticed the girl burying her face into Leiko's hair, and she sniffed lightly at her neck. "I'm kinda hungry..." she whispered.
Leiko hadn't really expected this. Ever since Kisa's vampire tendencies began to arise last year, such as the fangs and the darkening of her hair, the family had adjusted accordingly. Honestly, they were completely fine with it. However, vampires weren't treated very kindly in Chiyo Village, given that the village had suffered its fair share of vampire citizens harming innocent human citizens. Kisa seemed a happy enough girl, and the whole family hoped she wouldn't later become ridiculed or even punished for being what she was. leiko sighed a bit and said, "Alright, but just a little bit." She had to gasp as she felt Kisa bite into her neck without missing a beat, though it didn't feel quite as sudden as other bites she'd experienced in the past. Kisa was only 7 after all, and she was half human; she didn't need quite as much blood in order to survive.
Soon enough, Kisa pulled away, and Leiko chuckled quietly, resting a hand on Kisa's cheek and the other to cover the small bite would on her neck. "I hope you won't forget your manners as those things begin to grow in even more." she told her, and Kisa giggled in the cute little girl way she always did. Then she got Kisa to lie back down as she stood up, tucking her in. "Go back to sleep. I'll be around when you wake up in the morning." Kisa smiled up at her, closed her eyes, and then was out like a light. Leiko left the bedroom without waking up the others and closed the door.
The bite mark on her neck bothered her a bit, but she knew not to itch it. That was the funny thing about her new healing magics; she couldn't do a single thing for herself should she ever get hurt. Leiko looked around, trying to see if there was something she could do to pass the time before the sun came up. She noticed there were some dirty dishes in the sink, and Leiko knew that was always a possibility. In the end she decided to change into some comfier clothes, a pair of grey sweat pants and a purple tank top with a comfy black sweater that belonged to Mrs. Kondo that she wrapped around herself. Leiko then stepped outside, into what was considered a back yard for these places.
It was a small patch of dying grass surrounded by a cement wall. If you climbed into the top of the wall, you could see that it was attached to four other backyards, similar residences laid out in a square. For now, Leiko just leaned up against the wall, looking up at the night sky. Seemed that the sky was getting a bit brighter, it would be maybe an hour or so before the sun would come up. Maybe she'd do some work inside to help out, maybe she'd stick around out here and keep looking up at the sky. Anything to keep her mind off something particularly stupid and hurtful she might've said to Raps as a reaction to the vision she'd received in Traverse town.
